Anyone even moderately tech savvy with an internet connection and a bit of space on their computer hard drive can run a node. Bitcoin has a life of its own because there is no central point of failure since reachable nodes communicate with each other 24 hours a day to maintain a global consensus of all transactions on the Bitcoin network.
